My pedagogical interests center on modernizing the physics curriculum so that the content and delivery methods are tuned to expected student learning outcomes, and also lead to improved student engagement. Towards these ends, with colleagues in the IUPUI Physics Department, I am working on normalizing computing in the Physics curriculum, where the aim is to have a computational component in every undergraduate course with the goal of students viewing computing as a normal tool in doing physics, just as they view mathematical and experimental methods as a routine way of doing physics. The other major effort is on restructuring the introductory physics labs by using modern technology with the goals of incorporating experimental design, scientific writing, and data analysis in the students’ lab experience.

My scientific research is in the broad areas of laser physics, and nonlinear and quantum optics, with current emphasis on nonlinear dynamics of semiconductor lasers. In particular, we are developing experimental test-beds for implementing systems that are parity and time-reversal symmetric.
