It was announced last month that Dr. Pratibha Varma-Nelson is the recipient of the George C. Pimentel Award in Chemical Education. This award recognizes outstanding contributions to chemical education. Congratulations!

American Society for Engineering Education Annual Conference Abstract Submission
DATE: June 24-27, 2018
The American Society for Engineering Education is currently accepting abstracts for papers and poster proposals for full sessions, panel discussions, and innovative session formats for the Annual Conference, June 24-27, 2018, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Abstract submissions are due by October 16, 2017. Abstracts should be 250-500 words long.

25th Biennial Conference on Chemical Education hosted by the University of Notre Dame
DATE: July 29-August 2, 2018
The Biennial Conference on Chemical Education is designed for middle school science teachers, secondary school chemistry teachers, graduate students, and college chemistry faculty. You do not have to be a member of the American Chemical Society or the ACS Division of Chemical Education to attend or present at the BCCE.

Important Changes to the NSF IUSE Program
The IUSE solicitation has been revised as Solicitation 17-590 (replaces 15-585). The E&D deadline is now a year-long window from October 1, 2017-October 1, 2018. To help you become better acquainted with the new solicitation, there are on-line Q&A sessions which will occur monthly 2:00-4:00 PM, EST, on October 24, November 27, and Dec. 19.

Ann Austin - Strategies for Increasing Involvement of Women Scholars in STEM Field: Lessons from Advance Institutions

Ann E. Austin is a Professor at Michigan State University, who held the inaugural Mildred B. Erickson Distinguished Chair in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education (HALE) from 2005-2008. She was a Fulbright Fellow in South Africa (1998) and the 2001-2002 President of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE). Her recent publications include Rethinking Faculty Work: Higher Education's Strategic Imperative (2007), concerning changes in academic workplaces and faculty careers, as well as work on doctoral education and higher education issues in developing countries.

Michael Ashby, a David Ross Boyd Professor, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, from The University of Oklahoma, received his Bachelor's of Science Degree and Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. Dr. Ashby did his Postdoc research at University of Wurzburg in Germany.

Isiah Warner, Louisiana State University, Vice President for Strategic Initiatives, Boyd Professor and Phillip W. West Professor Analytical & Environmental Chemistry, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor, is a Boyd Professor in the Louisiana State University system, which is the highest professorial rank in the LSU system. He has more than 340 refereed publications in a variety of journals relevant to the general areas of analytical and materials chemistry. His particular expertise is in the area of fluorescence spectroscopy, where his research has focused for more than 35 years. He is considered one of the world's experts in the analytical applications of fluorescence spectroscopy. In addition to fundamental research, Professor Warner has conducted educational research which focuses on mechanisms for maintaining and enhancing student education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), with a particular focus on encouraging his students to pursue terminal degrees.
