SEIRI NEWS
SEIRI would like to welcome Dr. Janice Blum as the Interim Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education at IUPUI. We look forward to working with Dr. Blum and continuing our collaborations with the OVCR and forging new relationships with the Office of Graduate Education.
NSF has awarded IUPUI an ADVANCE grant designed to foster gender equity through a focus on the identification and elimination of organizational barriers that impede the full participation and advancement of diverse faculty in academic institutions. The IUPUI ADVANCE Adaptation project will improve institutional climate and promote inclusive leadership practices to address inequities in the representation, retention, and advancement of women, particularly women of color, in the STEM faculty. The project team includes: Dr. Kathy Johnson (PI), Dr. Gina Gibau (Co-PI), Dr. Evava Pietri (Co-PI), Dr. Peggy Stockdale (Co-PI), and Howard Mzumara (Evaluator); from SEIRI: Dr. Pratibha Varma-Nelson (Co-PI) and Virginia Rhodes (Program Co-ordinator). SEIRI welcomes Dr. Yujin Lee, Post Doctoral Researcher, as she joins our office. She comes to us from Texas A&M University.
SEIRI would like to congratulate Dr. Anthony Chase, on his new faculty position with the Department of Occupational Therapy. We are very happy to say that Dr. Chase will be collaborating with the institute as a SEIRI Fellow.
SEIRI hosted the 8th Annual Conference of the PLTL International Society on the IUPUI Campus, June 6-8, 2019. We had 60 peer leaders among 153 attendees. Our plenary speakers came from UC Berkeley, University of Miami, University of Montana, and IUPUI. We had representation from 40 institutions. The attendees came from 16 states, one foreign country, and one US territory. Congratulations to all IUPUI faculty and students who participated in the conference.
Dr. Justin Hess started his new position as Assistant Professor in the School of Engineering Education at Purdue University, August 12th. We wish him well.

Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning Lang, James M. (2016) In Small Teaching, James Lang presents a strategy for improving student learning with a series of modest but powerful changes that make a big difference. The book argues that we can look at a small set of principles from the learning sciences in order to create incremental--but very powerful--changes in how we help students learn.
